How to evaluate a zirconia milling partner with a useful pilot

Build a useful zirconia milling pilot for your dental lab: define scope, representative cases, acceptance criteria, receiving work and next-step decisions.


A useful pilot tests whether a defined workflow works for your lab—not whether one attractive sample can be produced.

Before outsourcing zirconia milling, decide what your technicians need to learn. You may be evaluating a new manufacturing step, a different delivery state or an alternative supplier. Write down the decision the pilot should support before selecting cases.

Define the supplier's job

State whether your lab will supply approved designs or request CAD work. Identify the required material, finishing scope and receiving point. A quote for an intermediate manufacturing stage is not equivalent to a quote that includes additional finishing.

Exact material identification matters. A zirconia manufacturer's portfolio may contain variants with different indications.[1] Confirm the proposed product and any permitted substitutions before the pilot begins.

Choose cases that match the intended relationship

Use a small, agreed set of representative cases rather than selecting only the easiest or the most complex work in your lab. The case count should be negotiated according to the question being tested and the cost of evaluation; it is not a universal clinical sample-size recommendation.

Include the relevant workflow conditions you expect to repeat, such as your normal file submission method, approval process and receiving staff. A special demonstration that bypasses those steps may not answer your operating question.

Your technical team should define any measurements, methods and acceptance thresholds. Do not borrow an advertised micron value as an automatic criterion without a suitable measurement procedure.

Separate a change request from a manufacturing concern

A new instruction after approval and a deviation from the accepted order are different events. Ask how each is handled, what evidence is required and who can authorize a new file or remake evaluation.

Do not calculate a meaningful long-term remake rate from one successful case. Early observations can identify issues to investigate; sustained performance needs a larger record of actual orders.

End with a decision

Your pilot review can conclude that the workflow is suitable for a limited rollout, needs specific changes or is not suitable for the proposed scope. Keep the reasoning attached to the evidence instead of relying on a general impression of quality.

For cross-border production, include destination delivery and documentation in the test. A successful manufacturing demonstration does not independently establish a workable import and shipping process.
